Venereal Disease – Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment
Summary: A disease which is transmitted by sexual contact is known as venereal disease. It is caused by different micro-organisms like bacteria, virus or yeasts. Treatments are based on effective diagnosis and accurate findings of causative microbes.
Venereal disease is caused by microbes which thrive in the moist and warm environs of the genital area. They are transmitted from person to person through semen and vaginal fluids, and blood. Various sexually transmitted diseases are caused by bacteria, viruses & yeasts which live in mucous membranes and skin surfaces of inner genitalia. Venereal or sexually transmitted diseases include AIDS, syphilis, gonorrhea, genital warts, Chlamydia and yeast infections. Some forms of hepatitis can also be contracted through sexual intercourse.
Venereal Disease Symptoms
Symptoms and signs of venereal disease: Women with the disease may present symptoms like abdominal pain, pain during intercourse, vaginal pain, itching, burning, fevers, nausea, back aches, vaginal bleeding or discharge, painful menstruation and occasional lesions in the mouth. Men with the disease have symptoms like abdominal pain, back pain, pain or burning during urination, penile or scrotal pain and fevers. Oral lesions are also possible. Both men and women may also present rashes in the genital area. Syphilis, herpes, HIV and gonorrhea all have accompanied rashes that may be red, lumpy and even filled with pus. There can be bumps under the skin in the genital area as well. HPV has even been recently tied to throat cancer.
Diagnosis for venereal disease primarily is based on clinical findings. The appearance of redness, rashes, warts and lesions in the genital area in both men and women is usually an indication of a sexually transmitted infection. The body fluids collected from semen or vaginal discharges are also subject to laboratory testing to identify the underlying microbial presence. Once the cause is identified, treatment is simplified. The causes may be bacteria, viruses or yeasts.
Venereal Disease Treatment
Treatment for venereal disease includes antibiotic or antiviral medication. All sexual partners of the infected person have to be evaluated and treated if necessary. Antibiotics used for bacterial infections that are sexually transmitted include Cefixime, Azithromycin, Erythromycin ethylsuccinate, Metronidazole etc. Viral infections are treated with antiviral medications like Valacyclovir, Famciclovir, and Acyclovir. Every medicine is dependent on which strain of bacteria or virus has caused the disease. Some VD’s can be treated at home but for the most part you need to seek professional help to cure the different ailments. Most but not all can be cured, and having one is sometimes an indicator that there are multiple in the body.
Management of venereal disease: Early diagnosis can alleviate the discomfort faced by patients to a large extent. Most diseases are curable with antibiotics and antiviral drugs. There are certain precautions that have to be exercised. Patients must avoid intercourse till the course of antibiotic administration is completed. Multiple sexual partners are always a cause for great risk and danger. The practice of safe sex with the use of condoms is advised. Relapse is common if both sexual partners are not treated completely.
