Abdominal Aortic AneurysmSymptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment

Summary: Aneurysm is a condition where a blood vessel weakens at some point and blood pressure causes it to expand. The expansion can go on till the artery eventually ruptures. Abdominal aortic aneurysm is when the aneurysm occurs in the abdominal artery, just before it splits into the iliac arteries.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm – What Is It?

Well it is a type of aneurysm that occurs in the blood vessels of the abdomen. In general aneurysm means the expansion of blood vessels to unsafe levels and the expansion continues till the blood vessels eventually rupture. The expansion occurs in a localized area, not throughout the length of the blood vessel. Aortic Aneurysm refers to aneurysm occurring in the large main arteries and this can be quite serious as the main arteries are the lifeline for the body, providing blood all over to different parts in the body. When an aneurysm occurs, there is a change in dimension of the artery at a certain spot. The artery expands at the spot and might go on till it eventually ruptures.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm is aneurysm that occurs in the aorta arteries in the abdomen. Upon observation, we can see that a major artery passes through the diaphragm and continues downward till it splits into two branches that go to each leg. Aneurysm can occur at any point in the length of the artery but mostly occurs in the part near the abdomen before the artery splits into two. Sometimes, the aneurysm can even occur in the split parts – that is in the iliac arteries that go to either leg. It can also occur in the renal arteries.  It really just varies depending on the situation and how the specific instance occurs.

This  is mostly seen in fusiform – that is the widening happens throughout the circumference of the artery and not just a bulge on one side. Blood begins to clot inside in layers and several layers of clot of varying consistencies can accumulate within. Another problem that occurs due to aneurysm is arteriosclerosis. This means the arteries harden due to excessive cholesterol in the blood. Due to this, extra pressure is exerted on the walls of the blood vessels and this causes them to expand unnaturally and flatten.

In abdominal aortic aneurysm, the cholesterol increase could be due to a wide variety of reasons, but some factors are risky. It can happen due to smoking. Smoking will speed up the rupture of the artery leading to internal bleeding and this can be fatal.  We have seen that excess cholesterol can also lead to this problem and sufferers of chronic hypertension have excessive cholesterol in their blood. The probability of occurrence is higher in females than in males. Chronic hypertension patients will have the problem of hormonal imbalance and this also causes abdominal aortic aneurysm.  Obviously see a licensed specialist if you are at fear of this happening to you or a loved one or for more exact information.
